This Is Us is an American TV show about the lives of three siblings Kevin, Randall, and Kate. Their lives are shown in the present day as adults and in a series of flashbacks as children with their parents Jack and Rebecca. The series has several plot lines dealing with issues like adoption, alcohol abuse, and miscarriages. There is a huge plot line in the flashbacks about the death of the children’s father, Jack. The entire series has been giving hints about how Jack is going to die. While watching the show, I came up with many theories about how he would die. My theories included: dying in a drunk-driving accident or dying in a fire.

On Sunday, February 4, 2018,  after the Super Bowl, it was finally revealed how Jack met his demise. In the episode before, during a Super Bowl party, Jack and Rebecca head to bed early because all of the kids leave the house. A crock-pot with a faulty switch malfunctions and starts the entire house on fire in the middle of the night. All of the family is at home except for Kevin. Jack successfully gets everyone out of the house safely, but the family dog is heard barking and he goes back in to save it. I assumed this was going to happen, but I also assumed that Jack was going to die in the house while it was on fire. However, several minutes after Jack went back into the house to save the dog, he came out of the house with the dog and several picture books and other important things. Rebecca and Jack then go to the hospital and talk to the doctor. It is revealed that he breathed in a lot of smoke and that the doctor says they need to run more tests. Several minutes later, Rebecca leaves the room to get something to eat, and the doctor came to her and told her that Jack had died of a heart attack because of smoke inhalation.

I thought the conclusion of Jack’s story was underwhelming. My family and I wanted a better, more noble death. We wanted him to die trying to save someone in the fire. The reason for this is because I did not feel like the immediate reaction to his death was very good. I wanted it to be more more sad. One minute he is was okay and laughing, and the next minute he was dead. It did not have the emotional impact that it could have. Overall, I enjoy watching This Is Us very much. It is a good drama with good characters. Since this plot line is done with, I am looking forward to the second part of the season where they will explore Jack’s life before he had kids.
